Due to the abundance of free time lately, I’ve decided to watch one of the highly acclaimed series in the anime world, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. I have to say, they don’t make anime like they used to anymore. This is one of the greatest things I’ve watched in a long time. On to the review!
Storyline: Continuing on with the theme from the Black Rock Shooter OVA, this is another anime on the subject of friendship. Your average third grader manages to find an injured ferret in the middle of a forest after seeing it in a nightmare before. This small thing happens and everything in her world begins to change. She becomes a mage and must now work to collect these odd jewel seeds. All of a sudden, more mages show up like that mysterious girl clad in black…
Characters: One of the most interesting points of this anime is the fact that the characters are all so young. It’s as if one is being transported back to their own childhood of believing in “aliens, time travelers, and espers,” or in this case, being a magical girl.
Takamachi Nanoha – Main protagonist, a 9 year old in third grade. Way too mature for her own age.
Testarossa Fate – One of the first antagonists, though she later converts to the good side. Her back story is one of the main focal points of the anime.
Yuuno Scrya – Nanoha’s cute, yet young archeologist familiar. He takes the form of a ferret and is the one originally giving Raising Heart to Nanoha.
Arf – Fate’s familiar, taking the form of a large dog. Extremely loyal to Fate and tries to get her to see the errors in Fate’s mother.
Testarossa Precia – The second and main antagonists in the anime. She is Fate’s mother and treats her cruelly. She constantly wants to return to the past and bring something back.
Tamura Yukari – I’ve taken a greater liking to her after hearing her as Nanoha. (Talim from SCIV and Tenten from Naruto) Her voice goes annoyingly high sometimes though. :l
Mizuki Nana – If you haven’t heard this person sing, go Youtube it right now. Her voice matches Fate so well, it’s amazing.
Mizuhashi Kaori – Yuuno. Another girl voicing guy. (Minami from Baka to Test and Miya from Hidamari Sketch)
Kuwatani Natsuko – Arf. ASAKURA!!! Kasuga from SB and Yue Ayase from Negima as well.
Other notables – Kugimiya Rie, Matsuoka Yuki (Right away I could tell that it was Tsuruya!)
Music: Innocent Starter is now my addiction. I’ve listened to it before, but now it resonates more with me. The ending, Little Wish, by Tamura Yukari, isn’t that great. It’s catchy after the first half of the season, but then it kinda dies away. Sometimes, it doesn’t really fit the tone/mood the episode just set.
Animation: Good for its time. Everything was just a world of color. I loved the designs of everybody, especially Nanoha! I seriously need that Nendoroid. I really don’t notice things like these unless it’s extremely superior or extremely poor quality. 😄 I didn’t really notice a lot, but the transforming sequence was well done I think. The combat was pretty nice too.
Enjoyment: One of the many great things about this series is that the producers know how to not drag something on for five or so episodes. I was glad that everything went fast paced, but not too fast that you feel as if something is missing. Plus, things aren’t overwhelmed with cuteness that it loses the storyline, like K-ON!.
