Basically, my little spiel on the game I recently downloaded from the PSN store. Think of it as a mini review that’s not following a constructed order.
After playing through two discs of Final Fantasy VIII, I’m starting to believe that it’s predecessor, the seventh and probably most famous installment, is hugely overrated. I love both games but VIII is gaining ground as my favorite. Hopefully, that didn’t start an internet troll war, but it’s not like anybody reads this anyway.
As always, the plot/storyline of these Final Fantasy games is well thought out and planned. The approach Square took regarding the plot and the whole business with Sorceresses and time travel is amazing. Taking control of Laguna through Squall is a great idea, tying in well with the concept of time distortion. The characters develop well as the story progresses and there isn’t a huge overload of clone characters. Everybody has a different fighting style. The canon pairings are awesome (if you didn’t notice the picture above). ><
Regarding the game play, I love the Junction system, only because it let’s me spam the GFs non-stop. ^^; Though it can be a bit overwhelming and confusing at first, after an hour or so, you’ll start to grasp it. The ATB The fact that monsters/bosses level up with your party as the story progresses is great too, to prevent an overwhelming easy completion. Drawing spells rather than buying them is something I liked too. The CG scenes were wonderful for it’s time. The memorable soundtrack is great too, fitting with the situation or scenery. Overall, the game is a very pleasant experience for anybody looking to spend some time on a classic RPG with good story and not necessarily focusing on how mind blowing the graphics are.
